"A yellow house was built on a hill as far as the eye could see, and the family living inside is threatened by the construction of a road. There is a space that is beginning to be stripped away with some dust of tiny hope, which is what keeps us going – despite the horror.
In this house, everyone sees the same thing in very different ways. And that distances – and also brings closer.
It is a place of contrasts. Love gives way to desolation, the blizzard gives way to fire.
There is the individual pain of that family and there is a supposed collective progress in the construction of a road that connects two previously distant points. This house is, for the road builders, an anonymous space. For those who live in it, the house is their home; the road will be the anonymous space.
This story is cyclical and provokes abysmal misunderstandings. I feel an experience in one way and I don't understand the way you feel it. There are many forces of power that shackle actions and open space for dehumanization.
The ancient olive tree has apparent immobility and firmly planted roots in the face of changes in space and time – the birth of the yellow house, the passage or permanence of people. The feminine universe is the center; there are illnesses that are attempted to be cured in women, such as double vision. When we uproot a plant, we see the roots, the interruption. Even the root of a tooth: in the root lies the absence of what was once whole. What is this absence in a person who is uprooted?
The narrative is presented through the Ancient Olive Tree, with constant overlapping of characters, as if trying to better convey their point of view, attempting to capture the polyphony of the novel. We all have many voices in our heads – our own, those of others, and their opposite. And these voices tend to be contradictory.
There are non-linear advances and retreats and a plunge into the unconscious and madness, between the real – is the real the hallucination of each one? – and the unreal. We dance between the exterior and the interior. On one side, the external concrete (even in its double meaning, that of concrete); On the other hand, there is the emotional and inner reverie in the minds of that family. They wander between sleep, dreams, wakefulness, and a reality that is difficult to understand. With emotional amplitudes: moments of celebration, of intense joy, moments of love and moments of hurt. Things break, break; objects and illusions shatter. They search for a first tenderness, the root to which to return."
