While in the third year of the Communication Design course, in ESAD, we received a proposal where the objective was to illustrate an Aesop's fable.

What is an Aesop's Fable?

"Aesop's Fables are a collection of moral tales, credited to an ancient Greek storyteller named Aesop, that use animals with human traits to teach lessons about wisdom, ethics, and life."

My work

From several Aesop's fables given by the professor, I chose one in particular that involved a tortoise and an eagle:

"Uma tartaruga, farta da sua posição inferior e cansada de rastejar tão devagar, anunciou que, se uma ave a levasse até ao céu e lhe mostrasse o mundo, a recompensaria com um tesouro maravilhoso que estava escondido num lugar que ela conhecia. A águia aceitou a oferta, levou a tartaruga pelos ares e, por fim, pousou-a suavemente no solo. “Onde está a minha recompensa?”, perguntou a águia. A tartaruga teve de confessar que não podia cumprir a sua promessa e que só a tinha feito para obter o que pretendia. Furiosa por ter sido enganada, a águia agarrou na tartaruga e, levantando-a a grande altura, deixou a criatura cair e partir-se em pedaços.”

"A tortoise, fed up with his lowly position and tired of crawling so slowly, announced that if a bird would take him to the sky and show him the world, the eagle would reward him with a wonderful treasure hidden in a place he knew. The eagle accepted the offer, carried the tortoise through the air, and finally set him down gently on the ground. "Where is my reward?" asked the eagle. The tortoise had to confess that he could not keep his promise and that he had only made it to get what he wanted. Furious at being deceived, the eagle grabbed the tortoise and, lifting him to a great height, let the creature fall and break into pieces."

With this in mind, I developed five final illustrations, each one referring to each part of the fable. In addition to the five illustrations, I developed a sixth, referring to the moral of the fable. Each illustration consists of a digital fusion I made between the backgrounds and the character drawings I previously made by hand. This is the final result and, as with many of my other projects, there is also an explanation dossier, documenting the entire process.
