REFLECTION
2020
Being made in december 2020, in ESAD (College of Arts and Design) in the Communication Design course, in the scope of the subject of Image Laboratory, it was a work that gave wings to our imagination.
In the first place we should choose 6 different artists, could be photographers, designers or linked to any other area. Then we should present them and talk about them.
In a 2nd phase, we should select an author, from the previous 6 we chose, and a work from the same author, and materialize the project taking into account conceptual, aesthetic, technical, functional or formal influences.
My work
I chose a very well-known photographer, Sebastião Salgado from Brazil, being one of my favourites with very pertinent themes in their photos.
I chose two of his photographs, one about Mankind, more specifically the refugees in Mali, and the other one about Nature, choosing a photo taken in Alaska.
The work, entitled Reflection, aims to convey the same feeling that Sebastião's photographs convey to me – reflection –providing an insight and a certain mystery, where the two most nuclear and notorious themes explored by the photographer are portrayed – Mankind and Nature.
All the work intends to reflect the same aesthetic that Sebastião uses in his works, which resulted in my choice for this proposal.
For the making of this work I decided to represent myself, backwards, frame-centered, as a spectator of Sebastião's work. On my left there's a representation of the refugees photo and on my right a representation of the nature photo that I chose.
As canvas I reused a A2 piece of card and draw the first sketching lines with a pencil. Then, for the first layer and to define the position of the lights and darks I used black and white spray cans, giving the main stain. For the drawing and the picture itself, including all the details, I used only two black fine point pens (0,3mm and 0,7mm), a white pen (1,5mm), plus a black marker (20mm).
At the end of this page are also the two original photos of Sebastião Salgado I used as a reference.
