  VISUAL IDENTITY - CÓRDOBA

2023

This work was done in the context of the third year Communication Design course, at ESAD.

We were first asked to choose a location (real or fictional) and create a graphic identity around that location, reflecting its symbolism and characteristics, as well as developing merchandising objects that conveyed the same values.
Being four objects, each should reflect and portray the chosen location or city: an object referenced the place to trigger memories; a promotional object to communicate the place; a playful, imminently recreational object; and a typographic object that represents the place on a city scale.

My work

Córdoba, located in the southern part of the Spain – Andaluzia – was chosen as the focus city for this work.
This project is essentially dedicated to portraying the Spanish city from an architectural perspective influenced by Arab influences. Since Muslim influence is strongly present in the city, particularly in its architecture, present in many of its most emblematic monuments and structures, it was decided that both the graphic identity and the objects developed would revolve around this same historical and symbolic part of Córdoba.

Of all the city's most significant characteristics, without a doubt, its geography, religions, ambiance, and architecture stood out as the most significant, with its architecture standing out in particular.

Predominated by a hot and generally dry climate, originating from North Africa, I associated some concepts to the city, such as: picturesque; harmonious; summery; arid.

Talking about the Muslim architectural influence I highligh the folowing: 

- Round/horseshoe arch
- Vault
- Water fountains
- Pastel tones
- Gardens
- Courtyards and cloisters

Behind the logo idea

Round and horseshoe arches are undoubtedly some of the city's most prominent architectural features.

Letters of the Arabic alphabet are also frequently found inside historic buildings, reflecting the centuries of Muslim occupation of the territory.

With all these aspects in mind the logo aims to especially unite these two characteristics, symbolizing the city's strong Arabic influence. It consists solely of the city's name and a shape suggesting a horseshoe arch, which merges with the name. The letters seek to reinforce this union with the Arabic influence, presenting characteristics that draw from its alphabet, such as its shape, different thicknesses in its lines, and the drawn character.

Object 1

The memorial object consists of a wall vase, something very simple, banal, yet very typical of the urban landscape of Córdoba. This vase aims to have greater meaning for those with a stronger connection to the city, precisely because it is something more "ordinary" that reflects the essence of the city in a more minimalist way.

Object 2

The second object focuses on promoting the city. 
This time, a flange was developed around a mirror, making it part of the opening that forms the horseshoe arch. The colors and patterns we see are also reminiscent of these arches found inside Arab buildings.

Object 3

As a third object and playful object, a bowl was developed to hold water for animals to drink, much like a typical cat bowl. The playful aspect here lies in using something mundane (a bowl) but in a way that personifies the fountains found in the historic buildings of Córdoba, fountains with restrictions, where it is forbidden to drink their water or even enter them. In this case, this object plays with this restriction on touching the water in simple fountains, encouraging just the opposite.

Object 4

A typographic object, intended to represent the place on a city scale. The sign, in other words, ended up being an adaptation of the letters already created during the graphic identity phase.
